Practice the Daily 4

October presents the fourth annual National Dental Hygiene month campaign, brought to you by the ADHA (American Dental Hygiene Association). Since every October ends with a lot of candy eating, it’s the perfect time to discuss how our Placerville dentistry patients should maintain their oral health, not just this month, but on a regular basis. To do that, there are four things you should strive to do every day — the Daily 4.

Brush Your Teeth

We all know it’s important to brush daily, but the way we do it matters, if we want to fully protect our teeth and gums. When you brush at least twice a day, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and gently brush every tooth using circular motions. Brush your tongue too for extra fresh breath!

Floss Your Teeth

Floss before you brush, at least once a day. Flossing every day protects against gum recession, bleeding gums and other complications from gum disease. Flossing correctly may take a little practice, but it’s worth the effort and should not cause pain. The best technique is to gently place the floss between each tooth and slowly go up and down along the gumline, removing food bits and plaque your toothbrush won’t reach.

Rinse Your Mouth

For added protection against cavities and bad breath, use antimicrobial mouthwash every day. It’s even better to use fluoride mouthwash, since it strengthens teeth with each use. Be sure to follow the directions printed on the label for best results.

Chew Sugarless Gum

For fresher breath and a cleaner mouth, chew gum after meals. This promotes healthy saliva flow and neutralizes acid-forming bacteria. Xylitol is good for teeth because it deprives oral bacteria of sugar, their food and energy for reproduction. More saliva also helps remineralizes your teeth, bathing your enamel in essential minerals.
