Choose the Right Toothbrush

The correct tool for a job is almost as important as the job itself. We spend about 1,000 hours of our life brushing our teeth, so using the right toothbrush makes a big difference! Most people brush for less than a minute, but to have the best dental health, all people should brush for two minutes, twice a day.
The Placerville Dental Group has plenty of information about good brushing technique, but here are some tips for selecting the best toothbrush.

Softer is Better

First, it’s important to choose a toothbrush with soft bristles. Enamel is strong, but the gums are irritated, damaged and worn down by a toothbrush with hard bristles. A hard brush doesn’t mean a cleaner mouth. Brushing too hard or using a hard bristle brush for an extended time just leads to gum recession, exposed roots and potential enamel loss.

Bigger is Not Better

A toothbrush with a smaller head is more effective and easier to manipulate for good technique. Using a small head toothbrush makes it easier to brush hard to reach back teeth and clean teeth individually.

Power Tools in the Bathroom

Are electric toothbrushes better than regular ones? Our Placerville dentists are frequently asked this question. People with arthritis definitely benefit from using a powered toothbrush. Studies lean towards the electric toothbrush as far as effectiveness, especially since certain types run for the required two minutes. Yet, a soft bristle brush with a smaller head can do the job with the same results as a powered toothbrush. If using an electric one motivates you to brush daily and make improvement to your dental routine, then by all means use it!

In addition to brushing and flossing daily, maintain your dental health by keeping your cleaning and exam appointments with the Placerville Dental Group.
