Tooth Sensitivity

When you come into your Placerville dentist for a checkup they ask if you have any sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity is a common and annoying problem that can come and go over a period of time. However, it does not mean that it’s okay to ignore tooth sensitivity! If it was unimportant, our dentists wouldn’t ask you about it!

Why Do Teeth Become Sensitive?

Teeth can become sensitive to hot or cold when the gums surrounding the tooth become loose or recede. This happens especially when you brush too hard with a hard bristle toothbrush or have neglected to brush and floss daily. If the gum shrinks or recedes, this can leave the tooth root exposed and therefore sensitive. Teeth may also become sensitive when the protective enamel on your teeth is damaged from eating and drinking too many acidic or sugary snacks. Another reason teeth can become sensitive temporarily is after a dental procedure. This usually doesn’t last long and goes away after your mouth is healed.

How to Prevent Tooth Sensitivity

Most importantly, have a good daily dental care routine. Make it a habit to brush at least twice a day and don’t forget to floss! Brush in a circular motion with a soft bristle toothbrush and make sure not to use too much pressure. Using too much pressure can actually increase sensitivity even more!

Take care to brush along the gum line to minimize gum recession and floss between all teeth. Use a dentist recommended toothpaste for sensitive teeth if needed. Limit sugary or acidic food and drinks. Rinse your mouth out with water after consuming sugar or sour treats before brushing your teeth to minimize enamel erosion.

Doing these small things goes a long way to controlling tooth sensitivity.
