A recent survey of 2,000 Millennials ages 18-34 found that one in three do not brush their teeth every day! Some reportedly go days without brushing their teeth, despite more than half of those surveyed saying they are afraid of losing teeth because of bad oral health. Why is a lack of oral hygiene common among young adults? Here are two reasons observed by our Placerville dentists.
Perceived High Dental Costs
The survey was conducted by a manufacturer of natural oral hygiene products. It’s therefore noteworthy that half the respondents said the relatively high cost of dental products was a factor in their lack of oral hygiene. Some also said the taste of dental care products could negatively influence how often they used them.
It’s therefore interesting to quote the words of one dentist: “Toothpaste flavor is very important in creating good oral health habits (which include regular checkups) for patients. If you can empower the patient to take back control of their oral health, it makes it more likely for them to go in [for a dental exam].” The Placerville Dental Group agrees! If the high cost of dental products and dental care is scaring you off from making dental care a priority, tell us. We work with our patients to provide cost effective, yet quality dental care to make you as comfortable as possible. That includes making your entire experience, including the flavors of products we use, as palatable as possible.
In addition, toothpaste comes in a wide variety of flavors, so “mint,” while still the standard flavor option, seems a bit bland when compared to fruit flavors, or even bacon! It pays to also check for coupons on dental products to save money. As long as you are brushing with a toothpaste containing fluoride, the flavor options are practically endless and your teeth benefit. And don’t forget, there are many dental products at dollar stores that also feature the American Dental Association’s Seal of Approval, so you don’t have to pay “top dollar” for quality dental products.
Fear of Dentists
Another major factor inhibiting Millenials from taking care of their teeth is fear of the dentist. This is a common concern for many people and our Placerville dentists understand. Keep in mind, avoiding the dentist actually does more harm than good! With regular preventative dental care, patients experience shorter exams and cleanings, better oral health and lower dental costs overall. Good communication between patient and dentist is key to making your visit calm and comfortable.
All people, no matter their age, should make dental care a priority. Brushing two minutes, twice a day and flossing daily is all it takes to improve your oral health!
