Dental Bridges and the All-on-4 Dental Implant Process

What’s the Difference Between Them?

Dental bridges and All-on-4 dental implants are two distinct solutions to address tooth loss. Both have their own benefits, but they are utilized in different scenarios, based on the extent of tooth loss and the condition of the patient’s oral health.

Dental Bridges Described

A dental bridge, as the name suggests, “bridges” the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It consists of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (these two or more anchoring teeth are known as abutment teeth) and a false tooth or teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.

The advantage of a dental bridge is that it’s a simple, time-tested procedure that can replace a small number of missing teeth efficiently, restoring both functionality and aesthetics. However, one disadvantage is that in order to create a bridge, the adjacent teeth need to be prepared (filed down) to support the bridge, permanently altering them.

All-on-4 Dental Implant Dentures

All-on-4 dental implant dentures, on the other hand, are used for individuals who have lost most, if not all, of their teeth in one or both jaws. As the name suggests, it involves the use of four strategically placed dental implants to support a full arch of teeth. This solution doesn’t rely on the remaining teeth as anchors, making it an ideal solution for those with extensive tooth loss or for people who have insufficient bone structure for traditional implants.

All-on-4 offers a fixed and permanent solution that functions much like natural teeth. Dental implants also help prevent further bone loss in the jaw, a common issue when multiple teeth are missing. The process is more complex than fitting a bridge and therefore requires a longer healing period.
