Don’t Let Your Toothbrush Take a Vacation!

Your Teeth Need Care Every Day

It’s Spring Break! Placerville’s hills are a beautiful green and there’s still wonderful snow at Tahoe. But whether you plan on staying close to home for Spring break or are going on an extended holiday far away, the dentists at the Placerville Dental Group want you to remember that your dental health should never be put on pause.

Brushing and Flossing 24/7, 365

Never leave your daily brushing and flossing routine at home! Oral bacteria don’t know you’re on vacation, so plaque and tartar wreak havoc on your mouth year-round. Besides vacationers, lots of chocolate rabbits, eggs and other candies make an appearance at this time of year, so extra dental vigilance is required. Therefore, here are some tips for keeping your teeth healthy during Spring Break:

  • Keep an extra toothbrush and dental floss permanently packed in a toiletries bag or suitcase so you don’t forget them. If you do forget, these dental implements are available everywhere (except the backwoods), so splurge on a new set if you leave them behind.
  • Interdental brushes are a great floss substitute in places and situations where your hands are often dirty – like mountain climbing, camping or backpacking.
  • Pack travel-size amounts of toothpaste and mouthwash and keep them in waterproof zipper bags (these amounts are generally OK for carry-on plane travel). They are handy to use on the go, something your seatmate on that packed airplane will certainly appreciate.
  • Don’t be embarrassed to use public bathrooms to brush your teeth. The clean feeling in your mouth is well worth it!
  • Brush twice a day and floss everyday no matter where you are.
  • Pack chewing gum for when you’re in a pinch to freshen breath and increase saliva production to work against decay until you can brush.
  • If the tap water is untrustworthy, use bottled water to brush and rinse.

So while you don’t want to forget your phone charger, you also want to remember to practice good oral hygiene while on vacation!
