March is National Nutrition Month

The topic of diet and it’s affect on dental health is discussed frequently on this site because our Placerville dentists care about the local community and the health of all our patients. That’s why we are happy to announce that March is National Nutrition Month! Every year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics commemorates this period to remind people of the importance of combining a healthy diet with exercise to promote health for the whole family. “Go Further with Food” is the theme for 2018 to promote healthy eating while reducing food waste.

Diets that Support Oral Health

What kind of diet helps everyone in the family to have healthy teeth and gums? A diet low in sugar and high in fruits and vegetables is an excellent start. There is no “one size fits all” diet plan that works for everyone, but even if a person has food allergies or other restrictions, less processed sugar and more selections from the produce department are best. Whether or not you eat meat and dairy, whole foods in the form of fruits, grains, legumes and vegetables should be the foundation of your diet.

Here are some tips that support healthy teeth, good nutrition and provide other benefits (like weight loss):

  • Plan ahead for meals and snacks. Having a weekly meal plan saves on grocery bills, reduces waste and helps you to make healthier food choices for you and your family, even if you’re pinched for time.
  • Cut up a variety of fruits and vegetables for snacks. Crunchy raw apples and carrots promote saliva production and reduce plaque. Take them “on the go” and you limit the urge to buy or eat sugary sweets at the store and workplace.
  • Replace the soft drink bottle with a water bottle. When you stay hydrated with water, you feel fuller longer and remineralize your teeth to protect them from acid erosion.

A healthy diet is not all that’s needed for healthy teeth. They need daily care and exams twice a year at the Placerville Dental Group. Brush and floss daily for the best oral health. Contact us today to make an appointment to support your healthy lifestyle!
