The Dental Two-Step

For Country Western music lovers, there is a popular dance called the two-step. It consists of two quick steps followed by two slow steps. It’s easy to master and leads to many different variations, but the basic pattern is invariably at the root. Similarly, a good routine of oral hygiene begins with two steps. There might be extra steps added or a variation to the sequence, but the same two steps are always at the foundation.

What is the Dental Two-Step?

Like the dance, the dental two-step is also easy to master.

Brushing — brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste helps to sweep away the plaque, bacteria, and food particles that all contribute to wear and tear on your teeth. Fluoride reinforces tooth enamel through a process called remineralization, which bolsters and evens out minor abrasions, so they don’t become cavities.

Flossing — unfortunately, brushing is not enough. A toothbrush is not designed to get in between teeth or into gum pockets, and those locations are exactly where bacteria and plaque are inclined to hide out. By stringing a length of floss between your teeth and gently scraping the sides, you remove anything trying to hide where your toothbrush cannot reach.

Variations on the Dental Two-Step

There’s really no way to change or replace brushing or flossing, the fundamental components for the dental two-step. You can floss first if you choose. Otherwise, you can add a step or two to make your dance more complete. For instance, you can add a water flosser to shoot a stream of water between your teeth and gums to help your flossing get rid of hiding culprits. Mouthwash may bring a final helping of fluoride, or just fresh, minty breath.
