Peptides for Oral Health

“Remineralization Guided by Peptides”

A few years ago, researchers at the University of Washington discovered a product that helps to reverse tooth decay. With this product, they are creating a technology using natural substances to boost the repair of damaged teeth. The research is ongoing, but if the federal government approves its use, we will have another strong supporter in the fight against cavities and tooth loss.

Amelogenin

One of the proteins our body uses for creating enamel is called amelogenin. The researchers used this protein to derive peptides, strings of amino acids needed to create proteins. To test the usefulness of the peptides, they set up a comparison study. They damaged several enamel samples and then applied combinations of peptides to the resulting lesions, making different test groups. One sample received the peptides with fluoride, one with peptide alone, one received no treatment, and other samples received various mixtures of treatments available on the market. The peptide-alone sample performed the best, with a thick layer of mineralization not only filling the lesion but importantly integrating into the existing enamel. That integration preserves the enamel’s strength.

The lead author of the study, Mehmet Sarikaya, said that “remineralization guided by peptides is a healthy alternative to current dental care” and could be implemented in over-the-counter or clinical products. In years to come, peptides could be introduced to toothpaste and mouth rinse products, helping to keep your teeth healthy and strong so you don’t need extensive dental repair treatments later.

No Need to Wait

Of course, having a strong routine of brushing for two minutes, twice a day, flossing, using mouthwash as needed, and visiting the Placerville Dental Group semiannually maintains your oral health successfully. But as with most things in life, added assistance is always appreciated. So, instead of waiting for the research to produce results on the market, keep up with your daily practice in oral hygiene and visit us for checkups every six months. And if you have any questions about oral hygiene or peptides, give us a call or list your questions on our online form as you schedule an appointment.
