Defeat Monster Mouth in February!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the American Dental Association (ADA) has chosen the theme: “Defeat Monster Mouth!” The Placerville Dental Group, along with other dentists all over the United States, supports the ADA’s pledge to help children establish healthy habits to care for their teeth. The earlier children appreciate how important oral health is, the more likely they will keep their teeth for life! “Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth for a healthy smile” – is the slogan for February’s campaign.

Parents are Important!

How can parents help their children have stellar dental health? First, take good care of your baby’s teeth. Even though they eventually fall out to be replaced with permanent teeth, baby teeth are not disposable! Baby teeth need daily care! They help a child to speak clearly and chew. They are especially important as babies learn to feed themselves on solid food and speak their first words.

So as soon as teeth erupt, care for them by wiping with a clean soft cloth each day. As your baby starts teething, offer a baby toothbrush for chewing, accustomizing the child to the feel of a toothbrush. Many parents find it practical to introduce the baby toothbrush as part of the bedtime routine. Begin using a small dab of children’s fluoride toothpaste on their brush at two years of age.

The First Dental Visit

When children have their first dental visit early, they establish a good relationship with the dentist and are less likely to be afraid of the dental chair. The first visit should be scheduled around one to two years old. Even though it won’t be a long visit, our Placerville dentists provide valuable information about daily brushing and flossing techniques for little ones and answer any questions parents have about dental health.

Parental attitudes about oral health influence children for better or worse. Parents who take care of their teeth tend to have children that do it too! “Defeat Monster Mouth” as a family and prevent cavities and the costs associated with them.
