Caring for a Mouthguard

Take Care of It

(and It will Take Care of You)

Mouthguards are essential devices that protect your teeth and oral tissues during physical activity. When designed for use while you sleep, they help to stop snoring and prevent the damage caused by teeth grinding (bruxism). But they’re not made to last forever. Talk to our Placerville dentists if you think it’s time to replace your mouthguard, especially if it is damaged or doesn’t fit snugly anymore. Teens and children definitely need to replace their mouthguards more often, simply because their mouths continue to grow.

How to Care for It

Caring for your mouthguard or nightguard extends it’s life and protects you from germs. Inspect it regularly and bring it with you to your check-ups at the Placerville Dental Group so we can assess it’s wear and functionality. We’ll even give it a deep cleaning for you!

After each use, clean the mouthguard or nightguard with cool soapy water and rinse completely before putting it in a storage container designed for it. You can also just brush your mouthguard with toothpaste and a toothbrush.

Never leave your mouthguard in the sun or in hot water. Don’t dry it out near a heater, stove or fireplace. Definitely don’t leave it in your car in the hot sun.

Pets might think your mouthguard is a chew toy if you don’t store it properly.

Need a Mouthguard?

If you don’t have a mouthguard, but are active in physical sports, you should definitely get one. For those who know they snore or grind their teeth (usually because their significant other has informed them), a nightguard will help everyone get a good night’s sleep. Protecting your mouth against accidents, injuries and abnormal wear is a wise choice that saves money in the future. The Placerville Dental Group is happy to get you a mouthguard at your next visit.
