The Differences Between a PPO and an HMO

The Placerville Dental Group is ready to meet your dentistry needs whether you have insurance or not. If you’re selecting insurance, however, and have a choice between a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), you may be wondering about the differences between the two types of providers. While either will get you the dentistry that you need, and the Placerville Dental Group works with a selection of both types of insurers, there are specific advantages to the PPO.

PPO and HMO Comparison

The PPO is designed for greater patient freedom. The HMO provides you with a specific dentist, usually of their choice. As with medical care from HMOs, if you require a specialist, you must get a referral from your primary care physician. In this case, that physician would be your dentist. Our Placerville dentists can play this role for an HMO.

With the PPO, however, you get to choose your dentist from a large list of professionals. When you need a specialist, you merely need to select one from the list. As a dental group, we do provide an advantage in that we already have on staff dentists skilled in oral surgery, dental restorations and endodontistry (root canals), so your services can likely be provided right here in our office. Either way, your right to choose is preserved with a PPO, while still realizing the cost savings typical of HMOs.
